Many of the most vital questions in cosmology require a detailed
understanding of a simple question: How does mass connect to light? I will
describe several advances towards connecting galaxies to the underlying dark
matter and to dark matter halos, which combine the results of numerical
simulations of cold dark matter with observations of galaxy clustering and
of galaxy clusters, including new results from a sample of 14000 clusters
selected from the SDSS. I will show how these results provide an
explanation for the observed luminosity, scale, and redshift dependence of
galaxy clustering, what they imply about the buildup of massive galaxies
and and also how they can improve the use of galaxies and clusters as
cosmological tools.
